5 Ways Online Art Sessions Can Support Your Mental Health
Mental Health Awareness Week (11th - 17th May) is a reminder that supporting our wellbeing does not always have to look big or complicated. Sometimes, it can start with something as simple as picking up a pen, slowing down, and creating.
My online mindful art group, Relax & Create, was designed as a gentle pause. A space to breathe, play, make, and reconnect. While creativity is often seen as a hobby, it can also be a powerful wellbeing tool.
Here are five ways Relax & Create can support your mental health.
1. It gives your mind a break from constant doing
Life can feel full of deadlines, notifications and endless mental lists. Creative practice offers a chance to step out of productivity mode and into presence.
When you focus on pattern, colour and movement, your nervous system has an opportunity to settle. Even a short creative session can feel like taking a big breath.
2. It can reduce stress through mindful focus
There is something soothing about repetitive, creative actions. Drawing lines, adding colour, building patterns.
This kind of mindful making can help quiet racing thoughts and bring attention back to the moment, which can support stress reduction.
3. It encourages self-expression without pressure
Not every feeling is easy to put into words.
Creativity can offer another route for expression, without needing things to be polished or perfect. Relax and Create is about process, not performance. There is freedom in making simply because it feels good.
4. It helps build confidence and joy
Trying something creative can reconnect us with playfulness, curiosity and achievement.
Finishing a piece, learning a technique or simply giving yourself permission to experiment can create little confidence boosts that ripple into everyday life.
5. It creates connection
Creativity can be deeply personal, but it can also be wonderfully communal.
Whether you join a Relax & Create session regularly or every so often, sharing creative space with others can help reduce feelings of isolation and create a sense of belonging (and we’re a lovely bunch of humans!)
Creativity as self-care
Supporting your mental health does not always have to mean adding more to your to-do list. Sometimes it can mean making space to slow down. To notice. To play. To create.
That is what Relax & Create is all about.
