3 Reasons Collage Is Good for Slowing Down
I’ve always loved collage and the more of it I do, the more I realise it's giving me way more than just a finished piece at the end. Here's what I mean…
1. Don't know where to start with collage? Good news, you don't need a plan!
Starting with scraps instead of a blank page changes everything. There's no right thing to draw, no likeness to get correct. You're just picking up a piece, seeing how it feels against another piece, and letting the thing build itself as you go.
This is honestly why I think it's such a good way into art journalling if you've never tried it. A page can just hold a mood, or a memory, or how your Tuesday felt, made up of fragments rather than one careful image you're trying to get right. There's proper room to just express yourself here, and none of the pressure of learning a technique first.
2. Waste free art
A lot of my collage work doesn't start on a blank page at all. It starts on paper I've already painted, printed, or made a mess on for something completely different. Rather than let those bits sit in a drawer forever, or go in the bin, I cut them up and give them a whole new life.
I really love that part. Every scrap already has its own colours and marks and little bit of history before it's even become part of something new, which means each collage is one of a kind before I've picked up the scissors. And nothing's wasted along the way, which feels good too.
3. Mindful art for wellbeing
Collage just can't be rushed. You're cutting, moving pieces around, deciding what to keep and what to leave out, swapping and changing… all before you commit to anything with glue. And I think that's exactly the gift of it.
We're often told to move fast, but working this way pulls you back into the present moment, whether you like it or not. Where does this colour need to sit? Does this piece overlap that one, or sit beside it? How can I turn these scraps into something fun and joyful? All those small decisions ask you to actually pay attention, and I think that's where the calm bit comes from. It's a big part of why collage feels so good for wellbeing, at least for me.
Oh, and one more thing...
Some of my collages end up becoming fine art prints so if a piece speaks to you, you can bring a bit of that slowness home too. Take a look here.
Thank you, as always, for supporting slow, considered, made-with-care art.
