What is mindful art?
Mindfulness is about paying attention on purpose to what we’re doing, without judging whether our experience is good or bad. Mindfulness can help us put some space between us and our thoughts and focus on our body and our sensory experience, which is why mindfulness is so helpful for dealing with stress and anxiety.
We can practice informal mindfulness with creating art. We can tune into our senses whilst we create, we can pay close attention to our art materials, the colours, the textures. We can notice thoughts that emerge and how we are feeling.
Creating art mindfully means really slowing down and focussing on the process of creating itself, without judgement. It can be incredibly relaxing and wonderful for expressing yourself!
Express yourself creatively
What’s important for me is that there is no fixed ‘end goal’ during my art sessions. This allows room for each person to make the art their own. Whether it’s a theme or a colouring page, we are all unique and have our own way of looking at the world and approaching creating.
Each person can create in whichever way makes sense to them at that moment, using whichever art materials they’ve chosen to use on that day. My art sessions provide time and space for you to play, explore and experiment. There is nothing to get wrong, because there’s nothing to get right.
Time to relax and look after your mental health
How often do you take time for yourself to just be? Schedule in lighthearted creative down time to your week and see what a difference it can make to your stress levels.
There is no judgement, no expectation and no pressure here. Just time to slow down, prioritise your mental wellbeing and create.
